Uprising in the Middle East

With the Middle East in a state of upheaval, RUSI.org publishes commentary and in-depth analysis from our network of distinguished experts.

LATEST ANALYSIS

Libya: An Uncertain Future
Tribal rivalries, a corrupt military and the absence of a legitimate political infrastructure mean that a post-Qadhafi Libya would have to overcome numerous obstacles in the pursuit of democracy.

Why Libya is Not Immune to Revolution
The causes of dissent in Libya are diverse – as are the factions which may end up jockeying for power. But the fact that they have emerged at all is perhaps the most surprising aspect of the uprising thus far.

The Fourth Wave? Democracy in Egypt
Egypt is guaranteed neither a democratic nor a stable future, but the status quo had already failed in these respects. The transitional authorities need to sustain the democratic pressure of the uprising in order to meet the challenges ahead.

The Egypt Protests and Implications for the Middle East
WATCH an assessesment of the impact the Egypt protests will have on the wider Middle East and how this will effect Western policy towards the region.

RUSI Celebrates 180 Years

Celebrating 180 years of RUSI The Royal United Services Institute has been at the heart of military and security thinking for 180 years. The Duke of Wellington established the Institute in 1831 and some of the most influential thinkers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have worked and spoken at RUSI.

RUSI has been at the centre of policy-making and thinking about defence and security throughout the zenith and transformation of the British Empire, two world wars, the Cold War and now the ‘new disorder’ of the contemporary world.

Reflections on the Defence Review,
Insight into Asia

RUSI JOURNAL | February/March 2011

In this month’s Journal, Malcolm Chalmers asks whether changes to British defence spending herald the end of the age of intervention, whilst Paul Lever assesses criteria for deterrence and former defence secretaries from the three main political parties offer their reflections on the SDSR.

PLUS:
Patrick Little asks whether the British army could have held a tiny outpost in the Afghan mountains as US infantry soldiers did in the documentary Restrepo, and three articles assess geostrategic developments in the Asia-Pacific region.
