The Centre for Finance and Security (CFS) at RUSI is delighted to welcome The Rt Hon. the Baroness May of Maidenhead for a keynote address and conversation with Tom Keatinge, Director of the CFS, reflecting on the intersection of finance and security.
Speaker Information
As Home Secretary (2010–16) and Prime Minister (2016–19), Baroness May oversaw significant changes to the way in which the UK tackles illicit finance and security. These included: preparing for the UK’s 2018 mutual evaluation by the Financial Action Taskforce (FATF); introducing the Modern Slavery Act 2015; creating the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the National Economic Crime Centre (NECC); establishing the Joint Money Laundering Intelligence Taskforce (JMLIT); introducing Unexplained Wealth Orders (UWOs) as part of the Criminal Finances Act 2017, among many other achievements.
Her book, The Abuse of Power, published in 2023, explores the abuse of power by public institutions and politicians. She is currently teaching a course, Democracy in a Changing World, at Yale University. She also chairs the Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, an international initiative which aims to help eradicate modern slavery and human trafficking.
