Overview

Dr Andrew Monaghan discusses his new book, ‘Blitzkrieg and the Russian Art of War’, exploring how Russia makes war. This event also includes contributions from Dr Jack Watling, Senior Research Fellow for Land Warfare at RUSI, who specialises in contemporary conflicts, including Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Russian strategy in the twenty-first century has been described in terms of ‘hybrid’ warfare, an approach characterised by measures short of war, such as cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns. As the invasion of Ukraine has brutally demonstrated, conventional armed violence remains a key element of Russian power.

Blitzkrieg and the Russian Art of War offers a high-level view of Russian strategy and thinking about war. Drawing on extensive Russian sources, the book explores how ideas about state  and war strategy have evolved across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, addressing important questions that have been overlooked by most Western commentators.

Blitzkrieg and the Russian Art of War is published by Manchester University Press in July 2025.

The discussion is moderated by Emily Ferris, Senior Research Fellow in Russian and Eurasian Security, RUSI.
