Overview
RUSI is pleased to host a discussion on what reductions in Western development assistance mean for security, and for the UK’s ability to manage instability across fragile and conflict-affected states. The session brings together two of the most senior figures from the British military and intelligence communities to reflect on the relationship between development, defence and national security.
Drawing on their own experience of command, operations and national security decision-making, the speakers will consider how development and security objectives reinforce one another, how development, aid and wider soft & smart power supports Western security objectives, how the UK and like-minded partners should adjust to a more fragmented geopolitical landscape, and what to prioritise across fragile and conflict-affected states as global aid budgets contract. The event will be of particular interest to those working on UK foreign and security policy, conflict prevention and stabilisation, and international development.
This event will be held in person and will be recorded for subsequent dissemination. All remarks are ‘on the record’. The meeting forms part of the RUSI project ‘UK Security in a Post-Aid World’, supported by the Strategic Communications and Advocacy Lab.
