Overview
The webinar examines how terrorist actors exploit social media platforms to raise funds and the challenges of identifying financial activity linked to online extremist content.
This online webinar features a new Project CRAAFT (Collaboration, Research and Analysis Against the Financing of Terrorism) research briefing, ‘The Abuse of Social Media and Messaging Platforms for Terrorist Financing’, by Gonzalo Saiz, Research Fellow at CFS at RUSI, in conversation with Andrew Mackay, RUSI Associate Fellow.
The discussion will examine how online appeals and private messages direct supporters towards payment channels, alongside the terrorist financing risks associated with platform monetisation. It will also consider how improved reporting and closer cooperation between platforms and financial institutions could help connect online activity with financial transactions, strengthening efforts to detect and disrupt terrorist fundraising.
