Overview
As demand for transition minerals accelerates in support of the energy transition, scrutiny of the mining sector’s environmental, social and human rights impacts is growing. Companies, standards initiatives, researchers, and civil society organisations are on the front lines of developing practical approaches to reduce harm, strengthen community engagement, and improve environmental and climate outcomes.
This event will bring together industry leaders, standards bodies, NGOs and experts to explore what “best practice” mining looks like today, and what the sector must strive toward in the future.
The event will also serve as the launch of a new Global Witness toolkit showcasing:
- Existing examples of responsible mining practices;
- Lessons learned from cases where companies failed to follow adequate safeguards;
- Practical recommendations for mining companies, investors and policymakers;
The discussion will focus not only on current standards and practices, but also on how the mining industry can evolve to meet growing expectations around climate, biodiversity and community rights.
