Overview

The evolving crisis in the Middle East has reiterated the clear link between geopolitics, security and humanitarian consequences. David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, will document this humanitarian impact, drawing on frontline experience and global response efforts.

The impact is severe – with restricted supplies, increasing costs, and fuel shortages against a backdrop of spiraling humanitarian needs. He will also explore the role that the United Kingdom and its international partners can play in addressing the crises, from immediate relief to longer-term policy solutions.

His remarks will be followed by a discussion moderated by Lord Ricketts, RUSI’s Vice-Chair.

David Miliband leads the IRC, an NGO founded by Albert Einstein whose mission is to help people whose lives have been shattered by conflict and disaster, including the climate crisis, to survive, recover and regain control of their future. He oversees the agency’s operations in over 40 crisis-affected countries and its refugee resettlement and assistance programmes in the Americas and in Europe. Miliband previously served as the UK’s Foreign Secretary. He is also the author of the book, Rescue: Refugees and the Political Crisis of Our Time.
