Overview

Join Professor Peter Roberts and Dr Paddy Walker for a discussion on their recent book, War's Changed Landscape, which challenges many assumptions about modern warfare.

Prior to the war in Ukraine in February 2022, defence professionals were trading claims about the revolution in conflict and how it was irrevocably changing the character of the nation and perhaps even the nature of warfare.

Those who objected to this characterisation were written off as ‘Cold War warriors’, incapable of keeping up with the effects of modern technology. The book explains that the masses as well as technology must continue to determine the shape, size and training of our armed forces.

In this wide-ranging conversation, the speakers will reflect on the relationship between international conflict practices, emerging military technologies, and the norms of modern warfare both before and after Europe’s seminal 2022 developments.

War’s Changed Landscape? A Primer on Conflict's Forms and Norms was published by Howgate in November 2023.

The discussion will be moderated by Professor Malcolm Chalmers, Deputy Director-General, RUSI.
