Overview

Finland's transition into a NATO member has required a rethinking of its traditional defence posture, moving from a national-focused approach to a collaborative and collective defence strategy. This includes integrating NATO capabilities into Finnish territory and adapting to the ‘one for all’ paradigm of the Alliance.

Against a backdrop of a deteriorating security situation in the High North, Lieutenant General Virtanen will discuss the importance of strengthening Finnish military capabilities, including interoperability with NATO allies, and modernising the Finnish defence forces to meet emerging threats.

Speaker

Lieutenant General Virtanen was appointed Chief of Defence Command Finland in 2022. Prior to this position, he was Deputy Chief of Staff Personnel, Chief of Policy and Plans, Kainuu Brigade Commander and the Secretary General of the Security Committee.
