Overview
This third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine offers a grim reminder of the human cost of the war, and the serious threat that Russia continues to pose to European security. The inauguration of US President Trump and his claims of negotiating a swift end to the war have been met with both scepticism and trepidation. But this has also sparked questions about the importance of a long-term strategy for dealing with Russia, and what this might look like in a post-war scenario.
Russia’s important trade links with China, its deepening strategic partnership with Iran, and its increasingly precarious position in the Middle East all present opportunities for both engagement and disagreement with Russia. Questions remain about Russia’s military intentions and capabilities in Europe, its nuclear posturing, and its relationship with NATO member states. Russia’s membership of multilateral formats such as the BRICS, CSTO and the Arctic Council all serve as opportunities for engagement as well as deterrence of Russia, but their utility and power has been disputed.
RUSI’s International Security team will discuss how Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America all configure their foreign policy approaches toward Russia, how this has shifted since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and where this might be going in the event of a ceasefire.
This panel of RUSI experts will, therefore, discuss the following questions:
-
What are the main economic, political and security impacts that the past three years of the war have had across Russia, the MENA region, Asia and Latin America?
-
How will these countries negotiate their foreign policy relationships with Russia in the longer term?
