Recent developments, such as the Trump administration’s rejection of liberal internationalism, the crisis in transatlantic relations, and the rise of non-Western powers, have caused fear in the West about the collapse of world order.
The Once and Future World Order contends that pathways to stability, including the independence of states, inter-state cooperation, and open economic exchanges, are not uniquely Western. Professor Acharya argues that the current uncertainty and changes might provide opportunities for bridging the West and ‘the Rest’ divide and develop new pathways for stability and progress.
This discussion will explore what the West’s decline might mean for the world and consider options for creating a fairer and more balanced international system.
The Once and Future World Order: Why Global Civilization Will Survive the Decline of the West was published by Basic Books in April 2025. Copies of the book can be purchased after the event.
