Overview
The Centre for Finance and Security is delighted to welcome Oliver Bullough, journalist and bestselling author of Moneyland and Butler to the World to discuss his new book Everybody Loves Our Dollars: How Money Laundering Won.
In this revelatory new anatomy of global money laundering, Bullough explores the crime that makes all other crimes pay. Without the ability to launder their ill-gotten gains, few predicate crimes would be worth the trouble for South American drug cartels, Nigerian kleptocrats, Afghan terrorists, American tax evaders, and a whole range of human (and animal) traffickers the world over.
In short, laundering money has never been easier, cheaper, or more secure for bad actors looking to maintain and expand their illicit wealth.
No amount of legislation, diplomacy, compliance, or prosecution has successfully prevented the usual suspects from keeping dirty money flowing into the economy at a steady 2–5% of GDP for decades.
Is it really the case that despite all our efforts to keep the crooks from enjoying their loot, there has never been a better time to be a criminal?
If so, it is time that changed.
Join us as CFS Director Tom Keatinge hosts Oliver for what we hope will be an uplifting conversation, followed by a drinks reception.
