Overview

It’s January 2051. You work in crisis response in a sector that is essential to the UK’s social or economic wellbeing, such as energy, transport, education, local authorities or the emergency services. Suddenly, things start to go wrong. To begin with, it could be an accident, or a series of accidents, but it quickly becomes clear that the UK is under attack. What is happening? How do you respond, and why? What are the consequences of your decisions?

The purpose of running the scenario as a serious game is to understand the decisions people make when faced with a crisis, and why they make those decisions. The simulation is organised by the RBOC (Resilience Beyond Observed Capabilities). The RBOC is a research project that develops academic and practitioner networks and which focuses on the UK’s resilience to hostile attack in the decades to come. At the heart of the project is a detailed scenario of how one such attack might take place in the year 2051. The project has developed an interactive, role-player exercise that turns the scenario into a serious game, in which the objective is to manage the crisis as effectively as possible.  For the RBOC project, this will provide valuable information on the implications of the scenario and help identify issues which the project team can then explore further. For the participants, the game is an opportunity to think about the future of the UK, its institutions, its technology, and its resilience to security threats. Although it’s meant to be enjoyable, it also has a serious purpose, using the techniques of scenario exploration and immersive exercising to generate insights about the security of the UK.

RUSI NextGen will be running the RBOC Game for NextGen members with the game’s designers from Coventry University. The event will be limited to 35 participants.
