Overview
Join us as RUSI takes stock of rapid developments in global energy markets and the future for critical minerals and considers the implications for climate change and UK security. This full day event will explore the many challenges we face across energy and related mining and industrial supply chains, examining how these are redefining both the global geopolitical environment and energy security strategies, which must both keep the lights on and limit greenhouse gas emissions. RUSI will investigate the crisis that engulfed global gas markets and how the UK should adapt its strategic approach to improve resilience as volatility and difficult winters loom.
Building a more secure and cleaner energy system, in the urgent timeframe needed to mitigate climate change, requires access to technology and raw materials, needed at scale and concentrated in countries themselves facing instability and climate impacts. Global competition for the resources has implications for geopolitics, new partnerships and international relations. RUSI will explore how critical minerals and clean energy supply chains are being pushed to the limit to meet demand as countries seek to move away from oil and gas.
We aim to bring together different stakeholder communities from government, the private sector, environmental and energy NGOs, and the defence and security community for a frank and open conversation. The day will be informed by research from four papers being produced by RUSI as part of the UK National Security and the Net Zero Transition project, which will be published in October. RUSI researchers will be joined on the panels by practitioners, officials, and academic experts.
