Overview

The risk of major cyber events is greater now than at any time in the past. In the last several years, we have seen incidents ranging from devastating global wiper ware attacks to the exploitation of mass zero-day vulnerabilities. Last year, the CrowdStrike episode was a reminder of societies’ reliance on IT systems across all industries. Despite this, there is no commonly agreed framework for categorising these events consistently and objectively.

The Cyber Monitoring Centre is an independent, non-profit body set up by the insurance industry to provide transparency and clarity around major cyber events. The Cyber Monitoring Centre categorises cyber events on a scale of one to five based on robust data and modelling, and an assessment by a Technical Committee of leading cyber experts.

The launch event will include a panel discussion with Technical Committee members and the Cyber Monitoring Centre team that will address:

  • How the Cyber Monitoring Centre aims to categorise events: its framework and definitions, as well as the data sources and assessment methodology.
  • Findings from the Centre’s assessments over its 2024 incubation year.
  • Insights on how the scale can enhance clarity and improve communication, preparation and response to cyber events.

The panel will be followed by a networking event from 11:30.
