Overview

The United Kingdom has published a raft of strategies over the last decade, including the Integrated Review, the IR-Refresh, and most recently the Strategic Defence Review. Yet these strategy papers, like their US equivalents, have failed to enable Western states to counter the threats that the same documents have often quite accurately characterised or predicted.

Statecraft dissects how states today can exert influence on an increasingly unstable international order. The book explores how states can employ leverage, and compete, in a dynamic environment where adversaries have the power to change the premises upon which a nation's aspirations were founded.

From Ukraine to Yemen and the South China Sea, Dr Watling will discuss the new rules of power in an increasingly divided world.

The event will be moderated by David Hogan-Hern, Director and Global Sector Lead for Defence, CT Group.

Statecraft: The New Rules of Power in a Divided World is published by Pan Macmillan on 19 March 2026. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase after the event.
