Overview

From social media to generative and agentic AI, the ways in which citizens access information, assess credibility and form political opinions are being rapidly transformed. These shifts are not only altering public discourse but also influencing trust in institutions and, ultimately, behaviour at the ballot box.

Alongside these changes, cryptocurrencies are introducing new dynamics into the democratic landscape. From enabling alternative channels for political financing and campaigning, to complicating transparency around funding flows, these technologies raise important questions about the integrity of democratic systems.

While democratic institutions have always adapted to technological disruption, the current pace and convergence of change present a distinct challenge. Policymakers and governments are grappling with how to respond to a rapidly evolving ecosystem where information, influence and financial activity intersect in new and often opaque ways.

Held on the day of the UK’s local elections, our panel gathers academics and practitioners across technology, policy, media and journalism to discuss emerging insights, risks, and potential mitigations.
