The Government’s Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act has just received Royal Assent and is now on the statute book. The Act addresses the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles and promotes reconciliation by establishing an Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery while limiting criminal investigations, legal proceedings, inquests and police complaints. The law also extends the prisoner release scheme in the Northern Ireland (Sentences) Act 1998 and provides for the recording and preservation of the experiences of people from all communities in Northern Ireland so that they can be further studied and memorialised.
The passage of the legislation through Parliament has elicited strong opinions from all sides in this debate, and arguments will not end following Royal Assent. Our event is an opportunity to hear from the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs on how the new law will affect all those touched by this difficult matter. The Minister will deliver opening remarks and will take questions from the audience.
The event will be chaired by Lord Carlile of Berriew CBE KC, RUSI Distinguished Fellow and former Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation.
This is an in-person only event, taking place at RUSI, 61 Whitehall, London, SW1A 2ET. If you have any questions regarding this event, please email Živilė Kulevičiūtė, Events Manager, at: [email protected].
