Overview
Interest in Taiwan and concern for its security have risen, partly due to intensified rivalry in the Indo-Pacific and partly as a result of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Awareness of the importance of Taiwan to the global economy has also increased, especially following supply chain pressures during the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent examples of politically motivated economic coercion.
This briefing will incorporate discussion on:
- How the UK and other countries can develop a better understanding of the importance of stability in the Taiwan Strait, as well as prepare for or react to potential disruption.
- How Taiwan is coping with disinformation, hybrid threats, and narrative and legal warfare.
- Enhancing Taiwan’s role in international organisations.
Ambassador Yao will share his views on the position of Taiwan in the international political and economic order, the challenges it is facing, and why these matter to the UK.
The briefing will be chaired by Dr Philip Shetler-Jones, Senior Research Fellow, Indo-Pacific Security, RUSI.
