There is currently a thriving debate about the relationship between states and private actors in the development of new technologies, and their impact on geopolitical equilibria and sovereign capabilities. We might assume that such debates wouldn’t apply to what is known as the 20th century ‘military-industrial complex’, but perhaps these assumptions do not do justice to the realities of the economic, political and social relationship between state and defence industry in modern times.

Dr Joanna Spear and Professor David Edgerton will discuss some key questions about the history of the defence industry in the UK, the relationship between state and private sector in the development of the armaments industry, and its domestic and foreign policy ramifications. They will also consider what this might mean for our wider understanding of the relationship between private and state actors in today’s technology-dominated world.

The conversation will be moderated by Dr Emma De Angelis, Director of Special Projects and Editor, RUSI Journal.
