Overview

Both commercial satellite operators and governments are increasingly concerned about uncoordinated close approaches of their satellites, especially from China, in the geostationary belt where many valuable commercial and national security satellites reside.

Chinese rendezvous and proximity manoeuvres in geostationary orbit have taken on a new level of speed, accuracy and brazenness. What do their patterns of behaviour show and might they become a danger to the militarily sensitive assets that inhabit this part of space?

The panellists will discuss the movements of Chinese satellites in this critical orbit and the evolving national and multilateral policy responses to manage the risks posed by close approaches.

Panellists:

  • Clinton Clark, Chief Growth Officer and Vice President of First Impressions, ExoAnalytic Solutions.
  • Ralph Dinsley FRAeS, Founder and Managing Director, 3S Northumbria.
  • Juliana Suess, Associate Fellow, RUSI.
