Overview

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR) is the UK Government's independent public authority examining the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles, with powers to investigate all murders related to that period. The Commission was established under the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023 and became operational on May 1, 2024. The UK Government is introducing further legislation to enhance the powers and independence of the ICRIR in the context of legal and political disputes, with implications for human rights considerations, national security, societal reconciliation, rule of law and broader UK-Ireland relations. Our panel will discuss the legacy of The Troubles, the impact the ICRIR is making today, and some lessons for the future.

Speakers

Peter Sheridan CBE DL, Commissioner for Investigations, ICRIR

Keith Surtees MBE, Assistant Commissioner for Investigations, ICRIR

Kate Anderson, Head of Compliance and Assurance, ICRIR.

This discussion will be chaired by Peter Neumann, RUSI Associate Fellow and Professor of Security Studies at KCL’s Department of War Studies.
